Tile sizes, and why they matter
A big tile shows every flaw in the floor underneath. A long tile has a slight bow from the kiln. A small tile has more joints, so the grout matters more. The size changes how the job is done, not just how it looks.

Flat first, then tiled
Check the floor
A long straightedge across the slab before we quote, so levelling is in the price, not a surprise halfway through.
Level it
A screed, or a self-levelling compound such as ARDEX K 15, where the floor is out.
Set out
Centre lines and laser lines, with the cuts balanced so there are no slivers at doorways. How we set out.
Back-butter every tile
Adhesive on the tile and the floor, for the full coverage AS 3958.1 asks for, checked by lifting a tile now and then.
Clip it flat
A levelling clip system on every joint so there's no lippage, and brick-bond offsets kept to about a third on long tiles.
Grout and movement joints
Grout to suit the tile, and flexible sealant at the perimeter and movement joints, where grout would crack.

Outdoor floors that shed water
An outdoor floor gets sun, rain and hose water, and it has to send all of it away from the house.

- Adhesive made for outdoor use, with the full coverage AS 3958.1 asks for outdoors, so water can't sit under the tile

Floor tiling questions
Can you tile over my existing tiles?
Sometimes. The old tiles need to be flat, solid and well stuck down, and the new height has to work with your doors, which we trim to suit. We use an adhesive made for tiling over tiles, such as ARDEX Optima. If tiling over would cause problems later, we'll say so and quote to take them up instead.
Does my floor need levelling for big tiles?
Often, yes. A slab that's fine for carpet can rock a 1200 mm tile. We check it with a long straightedge before we quote, so any levelling is on the quote as its own line.
Will my doors still close?
A new tiled floor is usually higher than what was there. We trim doors to the new floor height as part of the job, and it's on the quote.
How soon can we walk on it?
It depends on the adhesive, the grout and the weather. We'll tell you on the day. Where a room is needed back sooner, a fast-setting adhesive is an option.
